Home › Collections › The Thickest Trunks We Have Measured The Thickest Trunks We Have Measured Girth is the honest measure of a big tree. Height depends on what the tree is competing with for light, and age is usually somebody's estimate, but a tape around a trunk at chest height is a fact, and it is the number every register in the world records. This page ranks every tree we map whose trunk passes four metres, thickest first, and it re-ranks itself whenever a new measurement arrives. What it cannot show is a tree nobody has measured, which is most of them: the ranking grows as the measurements do. The arm counts are a rough guide rather than a challenge, though the top of this list would take a school class. Start with the banyan in Hilo, which is wider round than most living rooms are long.
