This oak was protected by the state on 1 September 1960, one of the first trees in Lithuania to be given that status, and it has spent its life among the dead. It stands on a hillock inside the old Oniūnai cemetery, a small fenced village graveyard in the countryside southwest of Saločiai. It earns the trip on size. The trunk is 6.05 metres round at chest height, close behind the biggest Lithuanian oaks on this map, the Gudlaukis oak at 6.30 metres among them, and the crown rises to 22 metres. The ground here has had its own surprises. In January 2009 a sinkhole seven metres across opened in the ground near the oak. It was filled, and the tree carried on. Its age is a small mystery of its own. The state cadastre lists the field as not disclosed, which is not the same as unknown: somebody may hold a figure and has chosen not to publish it. We have not been able to find one anywhere else. If you know how old it is, tell us. The cemetery has gates and costs nothing to enter. It lies about five kilometres southwest of Saločiai, near road 3116 toward Telžiai, by a bridge over the Kamatis stream, and the oak is visible from the bridge. You will need a car; there is nothing else on this map nearby, and this tree is the reason to come.
