How do I find it? You can recognise the pair by size alone: two planes twelve metres apart, the larger a full 5.5 metres round. They stand in Villa Litta Modignani park, about 150 metres from the fused Siamese pair.

Two plane trees stand twelve metres apart in Villa Litta Modignani park, and Italy's national monumental-tree register puts the larger at 43 metres, which would make it the tallest tree on this page by five metres. Read that carefully rather than as a settled fact: a differently dated citation of the same government dataset gives smaller figures for planes at this same park, and nothing independent of the original register has come along to referee between the two versions. What both accounts agree on is that these are big trees. The register's own measurement puts the larger of the pair at 5.5 metres round, the smaller at 4.8 metres, either alone worth the detour. They stand about 150 metres from the park's own fused Siamese pair, two planes grown so close together their trunks merged into one, and 340 metres from La Pianta di Affori, the plane a persistent local story ties to Napoleon. Three separate plane-tree stories inside one Affori park. Nobody has published when either tree was planted. Italy's monumental register has no age field for any entry it holds, a gap that runs through the whole dataset rather than this tree in particular, so treat the absence as the register's limit rather than a fact about the tree. The park is free and open daily, an eight-minute walk from Affori's own metro stop.
