Kuppelegen, the Dome Oak of Dyrehaven

The hiker who went out to find this oak came back unsure of the find. That account of Dyrehaven's named giants lists Kuppelegen and admits it could not be confidently separated from Stokkerupegen, a similar oak standing in the same group. So take the position from the register, which checked it in 2008, and take the walking account as support rather than proof. Kuppel means dome, and the name describes the crown: wide and low rather than reaching. At 17.2 metres this is the shortest of the park's big named oaks and among the widest, 8.63 metres round, standing about a hundred metres from Trepileegen. The age is a calculation, not a record. A trunk 8.63 metres in circumference is roughly 2.75 metres across, and growth rates for oaks grown in the open put that between about 350 and 550 years. Call it old and leave the century open. Go slowly at the end of the walk. These oaks stand in a cluster and more than one of them is enormous, which is exactly how the hiker came unstuck. The park is free and open every day, and it is a long way in: from Klampenborg station the walk is 30 to 40 minutes, with free-roaming red, sika and fallow deer for company most of it.
