At 33.5 metres, this oak is more than twice the height of the Independence Oak in town, and at 5.6 metres round it is the thickest of the four trees on this page. Oaks rarely get this tall. It stands in Pundžiai forest, about three kilometres west of Kaltinėnai and only 50 metres south of the old Žemaičių Highway, the historic road across Samogitia. Lithuania declared it a protected monument in 1989, in the last years of Soviet rule, and it is now looked after by the Rietavas state forest district. The record on it is plain and administrative: measurements, a designation, and some honest notes on its condition. Animals have dug burrows under the roots. The canopy has been observed to be thinning. By 2020 the old fence around it had fallen into disrepair and the undergrowth had grown dense, which makes the last 50 metres slower than they look on a map without stopping anyone. None of that says it is dying, but it is not a tree in its prime either, and a photograph from anyone who visits would tell us how it is doing now. It is about 16 kilometres from central Šilalė by car and 6.5 kilometres from the Laumenai oak, so the two countryside oaks make one drive. Nobody has published its age. If you know it, tell us.
