The Ash of Ingelsberg

Years old130-160
Girth4.9 m
SpeciesEuropean Ash

Approximate location.

The Landkreis Ebersberg protects this tree under a name that is also a description: Esche frei im Landschaftsbild stehend, the ash standing free in the landscape. It is natural monument number 41, and it earns the name. It stands alone at the edge of open fields, with a farm track beside it and a wayside cross at its foot, so the whole crown, 21 metres tall, stands clear against the sky. The list it comes from says it was planted around 1870, which would make it roughly 150 years old, a date that travels through a single chain of sources and should be held loosely. In 2020 its trunk measured 4.90 metres round, a big girth for an ash of that age. If the planting date holds, it went into the ground around the time of the Franco-Prussian War and has spent its whole life marking the edge of the hamlet of Ingelsberg. That life is not guaranteed. Ash dieback, a fungus that has killed ash trees across Europe, is at work in Bavaria. Photographs from August and December 2024 show this one standing, in full leaf in summer. If you visit, tell us how the crown looks; a report from the field is worth more to us than any register. Take the S4 or S6 to Zorneding, about 25 minutes from Munich, then walk roughly 2 to 3 km out to Ingelsberg along rural paths. The cross beneath it is your landmark.
