The Great Oak of the Leonhard-Eissnert-Park
Two careful people have measured this oak, and they cannot agree what it is. One says sessile oak, about 380 years old, which would put its first shoot around 1650, soon after the Thirty Years War. The other says pedunculate oak, about 200. That is a gap of nearly two centuries on the same trunk. Neither is an official register, and Offenbach's list of natural monuments does not include it. Both are private surveyors who date their visits. Flurbaum.de, in May 2026, measured it at 6.08 metres round at 1.30 metres up and about 30 metres tall, with a crown about as wide, and describes the trunk as three-stemmed. Rainer Lippert's Monumentale Eichen list, updated in March 2022, gives 5.91 metres at the waist and 27 metres tall. Measuring at different heights explains the girth. Nothing on record explains the age, so we give the whole range and call it an oak. If you know which oak it is, tell us. Either way it was already old in 1911, when Leonhard Eissnert began laying out a woodland park here on the Bieberer Berg. It stands on a meadow in that park, free and open at all hours. The May 2026 visit found some lower branches sawn off and recorded no dieback. The park is in Offenbach-Bieber, part of Offenbach am Main, the separate city on Frankfurt's eastern edge. Offenbach-Bieber has its own S-Bahn station; check RMV for the walk from there.
Leonhard-Eissnert-Park, Offenbach-Bieberer BergYou can recognise it by the trunk, about six metres round, on a meadow, with some lower branches sawn off. It stands in the Leonhard-Eissnert-Park on the Bieberer Berg in Offenbach.
Free, public park (Leonhard-Eissnert-Park), open at all times per flurbaum.de ('Zugang: unbeschraenkt moeglich (oeffentlich)'); the tree is on a meadow in the park.
Not verified: Offenbach-Bieber S-Bahn station is in the same district as the Bieberer Berg park; the walk from there and the travel time from Frankfurt were not checked.
