The Münchenstraße Park Ash

Agenot documented
Girth4.58 m
SpeciesEuropean Ash

Vienna made this ash a natural monument on 3 May 1946, less than a year after the war ended, while the city was still divided between four occupying powers and short of almost everything, firewood included. It is Natural Monument 356, one of the older entries on the register, and the list says nothing at all about why. The trunk is argument enough. The city's tree cadastre measures it at 4.58 metres round, with a height in the 21 to 25 metre class, which makes it a very large common ash. Ash trees that size have become rarer across Europe in the last twenty years, as ash dieback has killed them by the million, so a big, living one in a city park is worth seeking out. It stands in the Parkanlage Münchenstraße in Hetzendorf, in the 12th district. The register files it under the address Werthenburggasse 9, which sounds like a front garden and is not: the city's cadastre places the tree inside the public park, one metre from the register point. Entry is free. Nobody has published a planting date, so we give no age. If you know more, tell us, and if you visit, tell us how the crown looks.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Parkanlage Münchenstraße, Werthenburggasse 9, MeidlingYou can recognise it by the trunk, 4.58 metres round, an unusually heavy common ash in the 21 to 25 metre height class. It stands in the Parkanlage Münchenstraße on the Werthenburggasse side.

Free. Stands in the public Parkanlage Münchenstraße (MA 42); register address is Werthenburggasse 9, the park side, not a private garden (cadastre files it under the public park).
