The Jagiellonian Oak

For generations, guides at Poland's oldest botanical garden told visitors this oak was 500 years old, older than the university faculty that planted the garden around it. A dendrochronological study eventually corrected the number to roughly 230, a reminder that even a garden built by scientists can carry a folk legend for two centuries before anyone tests it properly. The real number is less dramatic but not much less impressive: the tree is very nearly as old as the garden itself, founded in 1783 when the Commission of National Education bought monastic land from the Jesuits to give the Krakow Academy's chemistry and natural history faculty somewhere to grow a teaching collection. Sitting at the heart of that collection ever since, the Jagiellonian Oak has outlived the partitions of Poland, two world wars, and the garden's own repeated redesigns. Its species is the single most common one Krakow protects today, a pedunculate oak among 121 individual specimens registered across the city as of 2023, but this particular tree is the one the garden itself calls its most impressive, trunk now six metres around. It stands for anyone who buys the garden's modest entry ticket, its crown wide enough to shade a good stretch of the main path, still growing quietly while its age keeps getting revised downward by better science.
