What is on this map

3217 trees in 617 places across 46 countries, every one checked against at least two independent sources before it went on. Each pin opens a tree with its age, its species, why it is worth standing in front of, and directions from where you are.

The tightest walks

A map of scattered pins is a list. What makes an afternoon is trees close enough to walk between, so these are the places where the whole set fits in one stroll: Hawaii (6 trees, 0 m apart), York (6 trees, 145 m apart), Miedzyzdroje (5 trees, 382 m apart), Cadiz (5 trees, 639 m apart), Bucaco (18 trees, 731 m apart), Parma (5 trees, 803 m apart).

Islands

An island is a different kind of day. The trees sit a drive apart rather than a walk, and what you get for the distance is a tree that grows nowhere else: dragon trees, laurel forest that outlived the Ice Age, pines that reach heights the mainland never manages. Madeira (10), Hawaii (6), Sardinia (5), Crete (4), Cyprus (4), Tenerife (4).

What is not on it, and why

Every pin says how precise it is. A tree marked approximate means we know the park but not the trunk, and the page says so rather than sending you to a spot where the tree is not. Trees on private land are left off entirely, as are trees whose own register hides their position, because the people who protect them have a reason. Nothing here is a bulk street-tree inventory: a tree earns a pin by being remarkable, not by existing.
