The Cemetery Lindens of Nieder-Erlenbach

Frankfurt's register says there are three small-leaved limes at this cemetery. The newest photograph we have found, taken at the entrance in June 2020, shows two. Either the third stands out of the frame or it has gone, and nothing we have read settles which. If you go, count them and tell us. The register line itself is plain: three Winterlinden over 100 years old on the cemetery of Nieder-Erlenbach. They are natural monument 036, protected for rarity, character and beauty, and they came through the October 2025 revision of the register, which removed many other entries. So as recently as 2025 the city still thought the group worth keeping. That is all that is written down. No girth, no height, and an age that is a floor rather than a figure: over a century, and nobody has published a closer date, or who planted them by the gate. Small-leaved limes flower late, in July, after the other limes have finished. That is the month to come, when the entrance smells of them. Nieder-Erlenbach is in Frankfurt's far north, about 15 kilometres from the centre. The cemetery is free to enter. About 500 metres east, in front of the Protestant church's community house, stands a protected oak 4.55 metres round, so the two make a short village walk.
