The Oak of Hegelsvej

Agenot documented
Girth5.23 m
SpeciesPedunculate Oak

This oak has a street junction to itself. It stands on a small public traffic island where Hegelsvej meets Krathusvej in Charlottenlund, a few minutes from the S-train, with the traffic passing on both sides. It is not a street tree in the ordinary sense. The Danish Tree Register measured the trunk at 5.23 metres round at chest height and 1.66 metres across, one single stem, and recorded the tree as living and healthy. For comparison, the oak we map in Frederiksberg Have is 4.95 metres round. The register rates this one remarkable at municipal level, and nobody gave it a name. It has not come through untouched. The register records that a large limb was removed on the south side, which is the kind of scar a tree collects when it stands beside a road for long enough. When that happened, and why, the entry does not say. Two honest gaps. Nobody has recorded an age for this oak, and there is no planting date to work one out from. And the last time anyone from the register stood here was June 2013, when Hans Erik Lund confirmed the position and took the photograph. We have found no dated sighting since. A tree this size on a junction this visible is hard to miss, so if you pass it, tell us it is still standing, and if you know how old it is, tell us that too.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
