The Fig of the Hort de les Camelies

A trunk of 10.95 metres puts this fig in the same weight class as El Titan and the giants of the Glorieta. It grows in neither. It stands in the Hort de les Camelies, a small public garden in the Aiora district, 3.3 km east of the centre and well clear of the cluster of famous figs downtown. Ficus macrophylla builds sideways rather than up, and this one holds to type: 22 metres tall under a crown 31 metres across, nine metres wider than the tree is high. A canopy that size over a small neighbourhood garden is most of the experience of the place. The garden belongs to the city's parks and gardens department and costs nothing to walk into. It is not manicured. Residents writing about it in January 2024 complained about its upkeep and described a palm there eaten out by weevil; the fig itself they left alone. Nobody has dated it. The register measures the trunk and stops there, and no planting record for the garden has surfaced. If you know, tell us. One warning worth carrying with you: the Jardi d'Aiora, 300 metres away, has its own group of old ficus and its own history of fallen trees. It is a different garden, and this tree is not in it.
