The Oak of Kantatenweg

GermanyLeipzigKleinzschocher

Years old200-300
Girth5.45 m
SpeciesPedunculate Oak

A short walk from the Kleinzschocher manor ginkgo stands a much thicker tree: a pedunculate oak 5.45 metres round. Leipzig's tree cadastre measures the trunk at 1.74 metres through, under a crown 24 metres across. The records disagree on its height. The city's list of natural monuments says 23 metres; the cadastre, updated in October 2026, says 19. Either way the crown spreads wider than the tree stands tall. It has been protected as natural monument number 158 since council resolution 1522/99. Its age is an estimate with a wide margin. The cadastre files a planting year of 1816, but that is a figure it gives to a whole class of old trees, not a record of this one. So the age here is a band, 200 to 300 years, rather than a birthday. No document says when the oak went in or who planted it, and we will not borrow a date from the manor down the road. It stands at Kantatenweg 5 on city-owned ground, about 220 metres from the ginkgo and next to the Volkspark Kleinzschocher, which makes the two an easy pair on one walk. No source says whether you can go right up to the trunk, so look from Kantatenweg. The latest word on its health is the city still listing it as standing. Nobody has posted a photograph of it lately. If you pass, tell us how it looks, and if you know its history, tell us that too.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Kantatenweg 5, 04229 Leipzig (Kleinzschocher)You can recognise it by the trunk, about 5.4 metres round and far thicker than the ginkgo's, under a crown 24 metres across. It stands at Kantatenweg 5, about 220 metres from the Kleinzschocher manor ginkgo.

Cadastre area 'Staedtische Liegenschaften' (city property), Kantatenweg 039. Whether the oak can be walked up to from the street is not stated by any source; it stands about 220 m from the Kleinzschocher manor ginkgo. OSM has it as a natural=tree 'Baumdenkmal' node. Visit from Kantatenweg.
