Behind a house called Nieuw Echten, reached only by a footpath squeezed between two front doors on Alteveerstraat, sits a pocket garden nobody driving past would guess exists. It carries the name of a family, Huges, who lived in the house from 1934 to 1970, decades after the garden itself had already been laid out in the English landscape style, with a pond at its centre. The weeping beech growing there predates the Huges family by about half a century. The register puts its planting somewhere in the 1880s. A weeping beech's whole trick is gravity: instead of reaching up, its branches arch out from the trunk and fall, so a mature one reads less like a tree and more like a room, walls of foliage hanging to the ground with the trunk hidden somewhere inside. The path in runs between numbers 59 and 61 Alteveerstraat, open to anyone who finds it. Nobody has published more about this specific tree than the national register, which is the only source we have for it. If you know the garden's own history better, tell us.

The pin marks the right spot roughly, not the tree itself. It stands here, but we have not confirmed the precise position on the ground yet. Know exactly where it is?
