The NW 59th Street Lombardy Poplars

SpeciesLombardy Poplar

Approximate location.

Lombardy poplars are supposed to be slim, and these two are, in one direction only. The city records each crown at about 30 feet wide, on trees 122 and 121 feet tall. They stand about ten metres apart on the private frontage of 1143 NW 59th Street in Ballard, both listed as Seattle Heritage Trees, and you see them together from the same stretch of sidewalk, which is why they share one entry here. The city's tree inventory gives the taller a trunk 77 inches across, about 20 feet round, and its neighbour 72 inches, about 19 feet. The Heritage poplar at Roanoke Street on Lake Union is recorded at 108 feet. Both of these are taller. That inventory is our only source, for the measurements and for the pin, which marks the taller tree and has not been checked against the crowns. An iNaturalist record from June 2026 falls within range; whether it shows these poplars has not been checked, so the city register is the firm word that they stand. The lot is private. Two columns this tall need no closer look than the sidewalk gives you. A Heritage giant sequoia stands about 350 metres west along the same street, and a Heritage bigleaf maple with a 92-inch trunk a little beyond it on NW 62nd Street, which makes three stops for one short Ballard walk. Nobody has published when these poplars were planted. If you know, tell us.
