The Millennial Olives of Azeitao

Three olive trees stand together on the shoulder of the EN10, and local tradition puts them at close to 2,000 years old. That figure comes from the parish's own account and a local walking blog, both attributing it only to unnamed specialists rather than to any published dating study, unlike Portugal's two scientifically confirmed ancient olives, at Mouriscas and Santa Iria da Azoia, dated by researchers at 3,350 and 2,850 years. Nobody has made that same claim for this trio, so the age here stays a reputation rather than a fact, repeated as loosely as the sources themselves give it. What is not in question is the shape. Their trunks are decayed, split, twisted and riddled with cavities, the profile a genuinely old olive takes on as its dead heartwood hollows out while a green crown carries on regardless above it. They are reported to have been declared trees of public interest by Setubal's municipal council in 1996, marked with a commemorative tile plaque, though the exact decree has not been independently confirmed here. They stand at the road's edge between Vila Nogueira and Vila Fresca de Azeitao, near Quinta Nova. Whether the trunks themselves sit on public ground or just inside a neighbouring plot is not stated by any source, so the honest description is a roadside view of three ancient, hollow trees rather than a promised path up to them.
