The Red Oak of Geleen-Oost Station

This Northern red oak grows by Geleen-Oost railway station, banded by the national register to a planting around 1870, roughly 160 years old. Northern red oak is an American import, brought to Europe from the eastern United States in the seventeenth century for its faster growth and brilliant autumn colour compared with the native pedunculate oak, and it was planted widely across Dutch railway corridors and parks through the nineteenth century. A station planting from this era usually marked the railway's own arrival in a place, and Geleen-Oost's station has stood on this line since the industrial growth that turned the wider Sittard-Geleen area from farmland into one of Limburg's coal and chemical centres. The oak has outlasted whatever version of the station building stood here when it was planted. Red oak's leaves are more deeply cut and pointed than the native oak's rounder lobes, and in October the crown turns a deep brick red rather than the duller brown most European oaks manage, one of the more reliable ways to tell it apart from a distance.
