The London Plane of Oostelijke Havendijk
NetherlandsRoosendaalBorchwerf Noord
One of the thickest plane trees in Roosendaal does not stand in a park or on a square. It grows on the lawn in front of an office on Oostelijke Havendijk, by the town's harbour canal, 4.07 metres round at chest height and 27 metres tall. Those figures come from the Bomenstichting's Landelijk Register Monumentale Bomen, which bands its planting to the decade 1910 to 1920. That makes it roughly 106 to 116 years old, and the band is the only basis for its age. By the register's tape it is wider than the London plane on De Kring, at 3.60 metres, though a plane on Burgerhoutsestraat beats them both at 4.40. The register is the only written source we have found for this tree, and it says little. A single tree, grown in its natural shape, in a garden setting. Its one piece of advice is that the crown needs lifting. An inspector last recorded it on 29 March 2025, and an aerial photograph from spring 2026 still shows one large crown standing on its own between the office and the street, with two smaller ones further north and south. Nobody has written down who planted it, or why a plane went in here by the harbour. If you know, tell us. The lawn belongs to the office, so see it from the pavement and the quay, where the crown reaches out over the street side. It is about ten minutes on foot from Roosendaal station.
The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
Roosendaal, Oostelijke Havendijk 15, in front of the Sensus officeYou can recognise it as the one big plane on the office lawn at Oostelijke Havendijk 15, 4.07 metres round, its crown over the street. It stands alone; two smaller crowns lie further north and south.
View from the public pavement and quay of Oostelijke Havendijk, free, no hours. The tree stands in the lawn strip in front of an office (register: owner private, visible ja, visitable onbekend); crown overhangs the street side. Do not assume entry to the office grounds.
Roosendaal station is about 0.6 km east-southeast in a straight line (roughly 10 minutes on foot).
