Tausendjährige Linde (Thousand-year Linden), Bad Ischl
The name says a thousand years. The register that protects it says 400 to 500. This large-leaved lime stands on the right bank of the Traun in Bad Ischl, about 40 metres before the old Traun bridge, south of a house the official file uses as its landmark: the Lindenvilla. Whether the villa took its name from the tree, no source says. When Upper Austria made it a natural monument on 18 December 1980, the trunk measured 5.45 metres round at a metre off the ground, the crown spread 14 metres and the top stood about 20 metres up. Those are 1980 numbers and the tree has grown since; nobody has published a newer count. The age came from the same file, an estimate rather than a ring count. If even the low end holds, the lime was already well over two centuries old when Emperor Franz Joseph began spending his summers in Bad Ischl. Legend rounded it up to a millennium. The state did not. The most recent sign of it is a citizen-science record from July 2026 of a large lime about 20 metres from the register's point. That fits, but nobody has confirmed it is this tree. If you stand under it, tell us. Bad Ischl is not Hallstatt. It lies about 20 kilometres north, past Bad Goisern on the Salzkammergut railway, so this tree extends the walk by a train ride rather than joining it.
In bloom
June, when the scented pale yellow flowers open and the crown is loud with bees
The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
