The Plane Tree of Rosenvaenget

A tree standing on the pavement in Østerbro has grown as tall as the five-storey blocks around it. The Danish landscape architects' association wrote a whole article about this plane, Mere end et træ, and it makes two claims worth repeating. This may be one of the oldest surviving plane trees in Denmark, and nobody knows how old it actually is. The second part is the honest part. The article says plainly that its age is not established, and that it is not even clear how old a London plane can become in this climate, so there is nothing here to date. What is established is the size: 5.78 metres round, 27 metres tall, with the crown reaching over the roof of the apartment building beside it, recorded healthy by the register in 2019. It is also protected. The Rosenvænget local plan names it as a valuable tree, which in a neighbourhood of this density means the pavement it stands on cannot simply be rearranged around it. You can stand under it at any hour, which is rare on this list. It is on the public pavement outside Rosenvængets Allé 30, on the corner of Såbyesvej, and if you happen to know when it was planted, that is the one thing missing.
