The Plane of Boulevard de Charonne

SpeciesLondon Plane

A reader on r/paris sent us here in one line: an enormous plane where Boulevard de Charonne meets Rue de Bagnolet, impressive, and at least a century old. The city agrees and puts a date on it. Its own fact sheet gives a planting year of 1880, which makes the tree about 145 years old, and its register of remarkable trees measures the trunk at 425 centimetres round and 23 metres tall. The printed sheet says 407; both are the city's figures, and either one makes this a very big street tree. Paris lists it as remarkable for its size and for the mark it leaves on the street. When the city's boulevards were rebuilt in the nineteenth century, plane and horse chestnut were the two trees chosen to line them, and the sheet calls this one a living witness of that work. Its date puts it a decade after the Second Empire that began the rebuilding had fallen. It is a street tree, with no gate and no opening hours, in the 20th arrondissement by the Alexandre Dumas metro. Nothing marks it out except the size of the trunk, so the way to find it is the corner itself. We have no photograph of it yet; if you pass, one taken in daylight that shows the whole tree would help the next person find it.
