The Plane of Viale Vittorio Veneto 3

A story went round Milan in 2018 that the big plane on Viale Vittorio Veneto, growing in the old tram-line median near Porta Venezia, had dried out and been cut down. It probably wasn't this one. That felled tree measured about three metres round; this one, still standing at the same address, measures 5.70 metres, nearly double, too large a gap to be the same trunk misremembered. The register lists this plane as one of the largest in the city by girth, 36 metres tall. Viale Vittorio Veneto runs along the Bastioni, the boulevard laid over Milan's old Spanish city walls after they came down, three hundred metres from the plane trees and monuments of the Giardini Indro Montanelli. No source beyond the register names this specific tree, so its age and any history particular to it stay unrecorded. It grows as a street tree on the public boulevard, free to see at any hour, no gate and no ticket.
