Vienna's own records cannot agree what this tree is. The natural monument register calls it a white poplar; the city's tree inventory, at the same spot to within half a metre, calls it a black poplar. We have not settled it, so this page says poplar and leaves the question open. What nobody disputes is its place in the street. The city protected it on 12 January 2004 as Natural Monument 788, and the reason given is about the neighbourhood rather than the tree: it "shapes the look of the local settlement". On Türkisgasse you can see what that means. The street is lined with lindens the inventory dates to 1980, and one poplar, about 28 metres tall at designation, stands over all of them. The measurements disagree as well. At designation the trunk was 3.70 metres round and the crown about 12 metres across. The inventory now records 4.26 metres. Both figures come from the city, and we have not reconciled them. Nobody has dated the tree, and the newest photograph we know of is from 2014. If you go, you can settle the argument in a minute: a white poplar's leaves are bright silvery white underneath, a black poplar's are green on both sides. Tell us which you see, and how the tree is doing.
