The River Red Gum of Pedro Salinas

At 42 metres this street tree is the third tallest in Seville's own survey of its singular trees, an Australian eucalypt growing over an ordinary residential street named for the poet Pedro Salinas. Its girth runs 5.30 metres at chest height, widening to 7.70 at the base, big enough that the tree reads as out of scale with the buildings around it. The city's 2022 assessment found no structural or physiological problems, but recorded mild plant health anomalies and named two biological agents at work on it: Glycaspis brimblecombei, a sap-sucking psyllid that arrived in Europe from Australia in the early 2000s and has spread through eucalyptus plantings ever since, and Laetiporus sulphureus, the sulfur polypore, a fungus that feeds on heartwood in mature trees. Neither has pulled its overall condition below good, but both are worth knowing before you stand under it expecting a flawless specimen. River red gum lines watercourses across the Australian interior, and it was planted worldwide through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for how fast it grows, which is most of how a street tree gets to 42 metres in the span of a human lifetime.
