A mass grave was reportedly dug beneath this tree in August 1944, according to testimony from survivors of the transit camp that once stood around it. The poplar was already mature by then, planted in the mid-1920s in what was still open ground on Warsaw's western edge, and stood inside the barricaded defense line that Polish forces held here during the September 1939 siege of the city, growing up alongside genuine combat rather than merely outliving it at a distance. Five years later the same patch of ground became Zieleniak, a market square the Germans converted into a transit camp for tens of thousands of Ochota residents rounded up during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, a place survivors would later describe as a site of mass killing before deportation. Remains were exhumed from beneath the poplar after the war ended. None of that history shows on the tree itself today: at roughly 25 metres tall with a 453-centimetre trunk, it was named Warsaw's Tree of the Year in 2025 and reached the national final the following year, recognised now for its size and condition rather than for what the ground beneath it once held. The Barykada Wrzesnia monument stands beside it, the closest thing the site has to an explanation.
