The Chestnut at the Schaeferkoeppel
By the register's figures this horse chestnut put on more than five metres of trunk in about 110 years. Frankfurt lists it at 5.30 metres round and 17 metres tall, and that is a great deal of girth for the age. Both numbers come from the same city entry and we print them as the city does, but one of them may be generous. If you know which, tell us. It is natural monument 032, and the register gives three reasons for keeping it: its character, its beauty and what the register calls landeskundliche Gründe, roughly reasons of regional history and geography. The entry does not say what that history is. It came through the October 2025 revision of the register, which deleted many other trees, and a photograph from June 2020 shows it standing at Am Schäferköppel, on the northern edge of Nieder-Erlenbach, the northernmost district of Frankfurt and about 20 kilometres from the centre. How you reach it is the thin part. Nothing we have read says whether it stands on the edge of a public path or in a field, so the pin is the register's coordinate and nothing finer. If the ground turns out to be farmland, look at it from the road and leave the field alone. Come in May, when horse chestnuts hold white candles upright over the whole crown. The cemetery limes and the oak on An der Bleiche are about two kilometres south, in the village.
