The Planes of Bagatelle

Years old175-185
Girth5.03 m
SpeciesLondon Plane

Approximate location.

Forty metres tall and planted in 1847, this plane was one of the last trees of the planting that made Bagatelle the park it is now. The city says the garden's planes went in between 1842 and 1847, when the estate was enlarged, and the register's date for this one closes that window. Its trunk measures 503 centimetres round. Bagatelle was still private when the tree went in. It stayed in private hands through the rest of the century and only became a public park when the City of Paris bought it in 1905. Two years later the city opened the rose garden Bagatelle is known for, and by then this plane was already sixty years old. The register files it under the Orangerie, and that is the best guide to where to look. Several planes from the same planting stand around the park, and the pin sits on the register's point rather than on a trunk anyone has confirmed, so if you find the one with the right girth, tell us where it is. Bagatelle charges a small entry fee from April to September and is free from October to March, which makes autumn and winter the cheapest time to come and look up. The giant sequoia near the Pagoda is 125 metres away.
