The Ginkgo of Place Dargent

Between two measurements this ginkgo got most of a metre thicker and most of a metre shorter. The trunk went from 3.67 metres round about the year 2000 to 4.59 in 2023. The height went from 24 metres to 23.1 across the same span. The second figure is recorded as it stands, with no explanation offered anywhere, and we are passing it on the same way. It grows in the park of the villa that belonged to the notary Fritz Weber, on Place Dargent in Eich, which people here call the Eecher Plaz. Luxembourg's own literature on its remarkable trees calls this the most imposing ginkgo of its kind in the country, and it has been on the official list since 2002. Its age is not known, and the source says so in as many words rather than reaching for a number. That is worth noting, because a ginkgo of this size invites a guess and the species is slow enough to make any guess wrong by decades. It earns the walk in November. Ginkgo leaves turn a flat butter gold and then come off nearly together, so the tree spends a few days gold and a few more standing in a gold circle of its own making.
