Re Leone

A forestry worker was sent up this slope in the 1970s with instructions to fell it, and Leone Vaia refused. He told his supervisor it was 'un monumento', not timber, and persuaded him to let it stand, which is how a nameless old cirmolo in the Lagorai high country became Re Leone, the Lion King, after the man who saved it rather than after any royal legend. Swiss pine grows slowly at altitude and rarely reaches size at all above 1900 metres, which makes this one's numbers worth stating plainly: 7.10 metres round at the base, 5.40 at chest height, roughly 20 metres tall, put at 700 to 800 years old by every source that has measured it. A smaller heir, itself more than a metre through, grows beside it with its roots grown into the parent's, the valley's own next generation already underway. Val di Fiemme's own tourism office names Re Leone as one of three headline monumental trees in the valley, alongside a masters' oak and a set of ancient beeches, though this one stands apart from both, deep in the Lagorai above Passo Manghen. Reaching it means a thirty-minute drive to the pass and roughly an hour on foot, off the marked trail for the last stretch. No bus goes anywhere near it. Bring boots and a map, not a timetable.
