The East Highland Drive Coast Redwood
United StatesSeattleCapitol Hill
Few coast redwoods in Seattle's tree records come close to this one: a trunk 98 inches across, about 25 and a half feet round, on a tree 114 feet tall. It stands on the private frontage of 2105 East Highland Drive, on the Capitol Hill side of Montlake, and the city lists it as a Heritage Tree. The same record gives a crown only 45 feet wide, a tall, narrow tree about 35 metres high. East Highland Drive also runs past Volunteer Park, where a giant sequoia stands near the same street. This is a different tree and a different species, about 750 metres east of the park, and unlike the park's sequoia it has actually been measured. Coast redwood carries flat needles in two rows; the sequoia's are short and scale-like. The city inventory is the only source we have, measurements and pin together. The point has not been checked against the crown, so go by the address. A naturalist logged a plant within range in July 2026; whether it shows this redwood has not been checked, so the register is the firm word that it stands. The lot is private, so look from the sidewalk. Two more Heritage trees on private ground make this a short walk: the Aloha Street tulip tree, about 650 metres away, and a sugar maple on 17th Avenue East, about 750. Nobody has published when this redwood was planted. If you know, tell us.
This tree looks much the same in every month of the year, so there is no season to chart.
