The Sequoia of the Giardini Margherita
How do I find it? You can recognise it by being visibly taller than everything around it, long before you reach the lake it stands beside. It stands in the Giardini Margherita.
A coast redwood is a genuine oddity in an Italian city garden, and this one has grown into one of the tallest living things in Bologna: 37.4 metres, a trunk 520cm around, standing near the artificial lake that anchors the Giardini Margherita's English-style landscape design. Sequoia sempervirens is native to a narrow strip of California and southern Oregon coastline, kept alive there by coastal fog the species depends on to survive the dry summer months, conditions nothing like Bologna's own inland climate, which makes this specimen's continued health after more than a century something closer to a curiosity than a certainty. The gardens themselves opened in 1879 on land bought from a former convent estate, laid out as Bologna's first genuinely English-style public park, complete with an Etruscan necropolis whose remains are still visible near the grounds. Among the park's other conifers, oaks and horse chestnuts, the sequoia is unmistakable purely by scale, visibly taller than everything around it long before a visitor reaches the lake it stands beside.
