Tanzlinde (Himmelsberg)

Climb the ladder built against its trunk and you reach a room. Three metres up, this lime's four main limbs run out flat and horizontal, trained over generations onto a steel-and-timber frame into a wide platform, floored and railed like a dance floor built from a living tree. Villages across Germany once held court sessions and festivals under trees shaped exactly this way, a Tanz- und Gerichtslinde, but most of the type have died or been cut down. Himmelsberg's has been a protected natural monument since 1971 and still stands, still trained, on what used to be the village churchyard beside St. Nikolaus church. Nobody agrees on its age, and the tree itself is why. The trunk is hollow, so no core sample can count its rings, and the district's nature authority has declined to let anyone drill for one rather than risk the tree to settle a number. A 2014 survey measured the girth at nearly nine metres and estimated 450 years from growth rate. The village's own telling runs longer, tying the lime to Himmelsberg's founding charter of 1243 and putting it at 750 years or more; some locals say closer to a thousand. Both figures are recorded here rather than picked. What is not disputed: in 2001 Deutsche Post put this exact tree on a postage stamp, in a series honouring the country's natural monuments. A tree trained into a room, still standing, still shaped, still argued about.
