The Eucalyptus of Forte Ardeatino

This eucalyptus stands on the grounds of a fort built to defend Rome, and it only joined the national monumental-tree register in late 2025, one of 211 trees added nationwide in a single update. It grows in what the register calls a residual eucalyptus wood, rooted in and around Forte Ardeatino, a defensive fort raised in 1879 as part of the ring of forts that once circled the capital. The species explains the wood. Eucalyptus was planted around many of Rome's forts and along its drained lowlands in the early twentieth century, valued for how fast it grows and how efficiently it pulls water from waterlogged ground. This one has done exactly that: 4.9 metres round and 18 metres tall, on a species that can put on that kind of girth in a fraction of the time a native oak would need. Nobody has recorded when it was planted, and the girth alone does not settle it, not on a tree this quick to grow. The fort itself, restored in 2006, sits inside what is now folded into the wider Tormarancia and Appia Antica park system. Its interior stays closed. The eucalyptus wood around it, this tree included, does not.
