The Marienlinde of Linden

A few kilometres from the Tassilolinde, in a hamlet that shares its municipality, stands a second lime with a name of its own. The Marienlinde of Linden is presumed roughly 400 years old, a figure German Wikipedia states plainly as an estimate rather than a measurement. The tree survey run by Rainer Lippert's monumentale-eichen.de project measured it in 2018 at 9.85 metres round at breast height, 20 metres tall, a broad crown that the tourist board lists as defining the character of the hamlet. Unlike its more famous neighbour, the Marienlinde carries no legend about a sleeping duke, just a name, a protected status as a Naturdenkmal, and four centuries of standing in one place. The regional tourist board groups it with the Tassilolinde as a pair of waypoints worth the detour, and locals treat it the same way: a landmark you drive past on the way into the hamlet, not a tourist stop with a car park. It stands in the open in the middle of Linden, free to see at any hour, a short drive from Wessobrunn's own famous lime and easily added to the same trip.
