The Weeping Silver Lime of J.C. Jacobsens Have

The main branches of this lime are held together with wire. The register noted the cables when it checked the tree in April 2019, which means somebody is managing a weakness in the crown rather than waiting to see, and it has not stopped the tree becoming one of the largest things in the garden: 4.77 metres round and 27.5 metres tall. The garden is J.C. Jacobsens Have, laid out in 1848 by the landscape architect Rudolph Rothe as the private grounds of the brewer who founded Carlsberg, and planted over the years with trees he brought home from his travels. It opened to the public in 2009 and is a protected monument now. Whether this particular lime was one of his own imports is not recorded in anything we found. The Carlsberg account describes the garden and not its individual trees, so the tree itself rests on the register entry. Tilia tomentosa 'Petiolaris' is the weeping form of the silver lime. The leaves are dark on top and white-felted underneath, hung on long stalks, so the whole crown turns pale and flickers whenever there is wind. The Danish register files it under Ungarsk Sølvlind, Hungarian silver lime, a local name for the same tree.
