The Giant Sequoia of Parc Amelie

Until February this year there were two. A pair of giant sequoias stood 14.6 metres apart in Parc Amelie beside the monument to Grand Duchess Amalia, planted together and grown together for about a century and a half. On 28 February 2026 the larger came down. Honey fungus had worked into its roots and there was no keeping it. Its timber is to be made into benches for the park it grew in, and a young sequoia has gone into the ground where it stood. The survivor is the smaller of the two, 27 metres tall with a trunk of 4.58 metres at the last survey, against the 32 metres and 6.15 of the one that was felled. It was reckoned at about 140 years old in 2018, which puts it close to 150 now. The pair are generally credited to the landscape architect Edouard Andre, who shaped this run of parks along the plateau, though no record names the year they went in. One honest note about the pin. The register holds two coordinates 14.6 metres apart and never said which tree was which, so we have marked the pair rather than guess. On the ground you cannot get it wrong: one is a full-grown sequoia, the other a stump with a sapling next to it.
