The Hollow Lime of Obermarbach

Years old300-500
Girth10.2 m

German Wikipedia calls this one of the most bizarre tree shapes in the country, and it is hard to argue. The Hollow Lime of Obermarbach is less a trunk than a shell of split, gaping wood, standing beside a sunken lane next to the village church of St. Vitus. Bavaria's list of notable trees gives it a girth of 10.2 metres. Hold that number loosely: on a trunk this hollow and this split, the tape may have gone round a ring of separate pieces rather than one solid column, and the list does not say when it was measured. The same list puts its age at about 400 years. That is a round estimate rather than a count, so read it as anywhere from 300 to 500. Near the middle of that band, it was already standing when the Thirty Years' War reached Bavaria in the 1630s. The list calls it only a lime and does not say which kind; if you can tell from the leaves, tell us. It is a protected natural monument. The most recent photographs we can find of it were taken in June 2019, so a word on how it looks today would be welcome. Obermarbach lies about 33 km north of Munich, in the municipality of Petershausen: a regional train from Munich to Petershausen, then a few kilometres on by bus or bike. It is further out than most trees on this page, and it does not look like any of them.
