Ficus of Parque de Canalejas (south)

The fourth and southernmost fig in this small grove stands nearest the point where a city gate, the Portal de Elche, once stood before Alicante pulled its walls down in the nineteenth century. It is a close match for its heaviest neighbour seven metres north: both run thirteen metres tall with a sixteen metre crown, and only the trunks properly disagree, 6.43 metres round against 7.05. A 2015 piece on the council's own pruning of this grove names exactly four ficus at the Portal de Elche, distinguished by where they stand rather than by any individual history, which fits a planting laid down together from the same nursery stock. This one greets you first if you walk in from the Rambla de Mendez Nunez side. Alicante's regional catalogue lists it as a monumental tree of local interest, without a name beyond its register number. No age survives for it specifically; the park opened in 1886 and its Moreton Bay figs are generally put at more than a century old, honestly a range rather than a date.
