The Field Maple of Hans Tavsens Park

The Danish Tree Register calls this the third thickest field maple currently standing in Denmark. That is the register's claim and nobody else repeats it, and the register complicates its own arithmetic in the same breath: two of the maples in the ranking, both in Dragsholm Park, look like two entries for one tree. Rank aside, the tree is odd for its species. Acer campestre is a small thing, more often clipped into a hedge than allowed to become anything, and this one has 4.03 metres of trunk and 12 metres of height in a public park in Nørrebro, opposite Jesper Brochmands Gade and a few minutes from Assistens Cemetery. It has had work done. Several of the larger branches have been sawn out of the crown and some of the smaller ones are dry, recorded by the surveyor who checked the position in April 2019. That reads as a tree being managed rather than a tree failing, and nothing in the record suggests otherwise. No second source carries this maple at all, so everything above rests on one register entry. Nobody has dated it either, and we have not tried to work an age out of the girth.
