Buk v Podlesí

This beech has been under legal protection since 25 July 1978, which is longer than almost anything else on this map, and that is very close to everything anybody has written down about it. The rest of the record is two numbers. Twenty-six metres tall, 4.15 metres round at the trunk. It stands in the Podlesí woods near the village of Mcely in the Nymburk district of Central Bohemia, in forest rather than in a park or a churchyard, which is where protected trees usually turn up. The state register carries the entry and the coordinate. Mcely's own page about its memorial trees names other trees and not this one. No age has ever been recorded and no local story attaches to it. That absence is worth something. Most protected trees are protected because a town decided it loved them, and the loving leaves a paper trail of competitions, plaques and newspaper pieces. This one was singled out nearly fifty years ago by somebody doing an inventory, and then left standing in a wood, and it has been quietly getting on with it ever since.
