Home › Collections › The Oldest Tree in Every City We Map The Oldest Tree in Every City We Map Every place on this site has an oldest tree, and for a long while this page listed fifteen of them, because fifteen countries was all we mapped. It now names all 626, grouped by country, and it rebuilds itself: find an older tree in Kyoto tonight and Kyoto's line changes tomorrow.
Read it as a map of how differently the record is held. Sweden leads on a root system carbon dated to 9,550 years, with a spruce standing on top of it that is nobody's idea of ancient. Britain answers with two yews that have stood in churchyards since before the churches. Japan counts in camphors, Greece and Italy in olives, the Netherlands in lindens that were pollarded for centuries and came out thick rather than tall.
Where we do not know a tree's age the line says so rather than guessing.
