How do I find it? In the Mediterranean collection rather than in any old grove: an olive dug up whole 40 km along the coast and replanted here.

This olive did not grow where it now stands. It was dug up whole in Velez-Malaga, a town roughly 40km east along the coast, and moved into the Mediterranean plant collection of the Jardin Botanico-Historico La Concepcion, where it has continued growing as if nothing happened. The garden itself began in 1855, built by the Marquises of Casa Loring on a former farm estate, and later expanded by the Echevarria-Echevarrieta family before its 1943 declaration as a historic garden, but this olive predates all of that by centuries: the garden's own estimate puts it at roughly 400 years old, a trunk perimeter of 3.30 metres marking the slow accumulation of growth rings no one has counted directly, since felling a living tree to check would defeat the point. Olives resist precise dating the way most ancient trees do, hollowing and regrowing from their own base over centuries, which makes any figure an estimate rather than a measurement. What is certain is the transplant itself, a considerable feat of tree-moving for a specimen this size, undertaken to bring one of the region's oldest surviving olives into a collection built specifically to house trees too remarkable to leave where they were found.
