The Jahneiche

GermanyStuttgartZuffenhausen

Approximate location.

By 1711 this oak was already called a stately old tree, and a duke chose it as the spot for his hunting lodge. That is the account in the German Wikipedia: Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg had a hunting pavilion built beside it for his Schlotwiese hunting ground. We have not seen the 1711 record behind the claim, so we carry it as Wikipedia's and put the tree's age no closer than over 300 years. Nobody has measured the trunk to test that. If the 1711 mention holds, it is the oldest tree on this page. The name is far younger than the tree. In 1929 the Turnverein Zuffenhausen, the district's gymnastics club, marked its 40th anniversary by naming the oak after Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the Turnvater of German gymnastics. A tree that stood in a duke's hunting ground now carries a gymnastics club's birthday present. It has not had an untroubled old age. Some years ago, a local newspaper reported, a gust of wind broke off a heavy branch and the area around it was cordoned off. The report is no longer online. Stuttgart has protected the oak as a natural monument since 2003, and a photograph from April 2020 names it. It stands where Lange Allee ends at Marconistraße. The pin is the register's approximate point, and no source describes whether the trunk sits on a verge or a green strip. If you go, tell us what you find, and its girth if you can measure it.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Marconistrasse at the end of Lange Allee, Zuffenhausen, StuttgartYou can recognise it as the old oak at the junction where Lange Allee ends at Marconistraße in Zuffenhausen. Another protected oak stands about 70 metres north-east; this is the one on the junction.

Standing at the junction of Lange Allee and Marconistrasse, a public street junction; no ticket. Exact surroundings (verge or green strip) not confirmed.
