The Meilahti Ancient Pine

Helsinki's oldest confirmed tree grows next to a grave older than the city itself, a Bronze Age burial cairn built around 2000 BC on a rocky shore in Meilahti. Core sampling and ring counting put the pine's age at roughly 340 years, meaning it took root sometime in the late 1600s, more than a century before Helsinki became Finland's capital and long before Meilahti was anything but rock and shoreline forest. It has grown slowly and stayed short for a pine, barely 10 metres tall, stunted the way trees often are when they spend three centuries rooted in thin soil over bare granite rather than easy farmland. That slow growth is very likely what kept it alive this long: a faster-growing tree on the same ground would have run out of room, or been worth cutting for timber, decades before this one reached its second century. The pine and the grave beside it now share the same small patch of shoreline park, reachable by tram to Meilahti hospital and a short walk toward the water, both quietly older than almost everything else in the neighbourhood around them.
