The Zechenter Garden Oak

Take me thereGet the app

How do I find it? You can recognise it as the dominant oak in the garden, an old lightning scar visible on its trunk. It stands in the middle of Zechenterova zahrada in central Kremnica.

Slovakia's national tree-of-the-year vote in 2013 went to an oak growing in a town garden rather than a forest, and the town put it forward for the European title the same year. It is the dominant tree of Zechenterova zahrada, Zechenter's Garden, itself a National Cultural Monument protected since 1958, in the middle of Kremnica, a mining and mint town old enough to have minted the ducats that once financed a kingdom. Ages given for it differ by fifty years: one source says 350, another 400, and both stay on the page rather than one being chosen to look more precise than the evidence allows. Nobody has published a trustworthy girth measurement either, which is unusual for a tree this decorated, so the field stays empty and open to whoever brings a tape. An old photograph shows lightning damage to the trunk at some point in its life, and the tree carried on regardless. In 2026 the town secured 1.3 million euros in EU funding to restore the whole garden, which is not the action of a place treating its centrepiece tree as an afterthought. The same official register that protects this oak lists two yews in the same garden and two more limes elsewhere in Kremnica, so the town may well hold enough remarkable trees for a fuller page once someone verifies them. This one stands on its own for now, free, in the town centre.
