The Tallest Trees We Have Measured

Height is what people mean when they say a tree is big, and it is the measurement we hold least of, because it takes a surveyor rather than a tape. Every figure on this page comes from a register's own survey or from a plaque at the foot of the tree, never from our own prose: a sentence in a story about height is as often about the species in general, or the tree next to it, or how tall it stood before a storm took the top off. So this ranks the trees that have actually been measured at twenty-five metres or more, tallest first, and it grows as the measurements do. The building comparisons are rough. Start with a mountain ash in a Portuguese forest that is taller than most church towers around it.
