The Oak of the Bühlau Village Green

Years old130-160
Girth3.95 m
SpeciesPedunculate Oak

Approximate location.

This oak is wider than it is tall: when it was measured in 1999 its crown spread about 28 metres across, on a tree about 25 metres high. It stands on what was once the village green of Bühlau, beside Quohrener Strasse, and a few metres to its south-east a small stream, the Quohrener Abzugsgraben, rises out of the ground. It is not a veteran. The city's 2008 brochure on its natural monuments put it at about 140 years, which places its planting somewhere around the 1860s or 1870s. That is an estimate, not a record, and nobody has written down who planted it or why. Dresden protected it in 1999, and the ordinance gives three reasons: its particular form and character, what it does for the look of the place, and dendrological grounds. At designation the trunk was 1.26 metres thick at a metre off the ground, about 3.95 metres round; the city's own list gives 4.00. Two things we would like help with. The pin is approximate: two published coordinates for this tree sit about 60 metres apart, and ours is the one beside the spring. And the most recent dated photographs of it we know of were taken in May 2015. If you have stood under it since, tell us it is still there, and where exactly.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Quohrener Strasse, former village green (Dorfanger), Bühlau, DresdenYou can recognise it by its crown, about 28 metres across and wider than the tree is tall. It stands on the old village green beside Quohrener Strasse, a few metres north-west of where the Quohren stream rises.

Free. Stands on the former village green beside Quohrener Strasse, public ground, no ticket.

Not verified. Bühlau is a north-eastern district; the Dresden tram line to Bühlau ends nearby but the stop name and walking time were not checked.
