The Plane of Via San Lazzaro

Two registers agree on this plane to the centimetre and disagree about which street it stands on. Italy's national and regional registers put it on Salita Madonna di Gretta; the citizen tree register, citing the same official sheet, gives its address as Via San Lazzaro 16. Both give the same coordinate, the same trunk of 3.60 metres round and the same height of twenty-five metres, so this is one tree with two labels rather than two trees, and the pin is the part to trust. It stands alone. Nine of Trieste's protected planes share the three hectares of the Giardino Pubblico; this one is by the roadside on the slope between the Barcola seafront and Gretta, belonging to no garden and no grove. That makes it a useful stop on the way out toward Miramare, where the park's pines and redwoods wait. Nobody has dated it. There is no planting record, no survey age and no story attached to it in any source we found, only the measurements, which the citizen register confirmed on the ground in October 2021.
