The Tulip Tree of J.C. Jacobsens Have

The flowers this tree is named for open in June, high in the crown, and most people standing under it never see one. Liriodendron tulipifera carries greenish orange blooms shaped like tulips, and it carries them at the top, twenty metres up in this case, which is why the ground under an old tulip tree in summer is often the only place you find them. This is one of the tallest trees in J.C. Jacobsens Have at 26.5 metres, on a single stem 3.92 metres round, standing on the western lawn toward the northwest. The garden was the private ground of the brewer who founded Carlsberg, laid out in 1848 and stocked with trees he brought back from his travels; it opened to the public in 2009. The Carlsberg account tells that story about the garden and not about this tree, so the tulip tree itself rests on the register survey of April 2019, which recorded it healthy. The leaf is the other oddity. It looks like a maple leaf with the tip cut off square, unmistakable once you have seen one, and in late October the whole crown of them turns clear yellow.
